What we do: Double P Horsmanship is a family run business
The Prettyman's specialize in helping horses and people develop a working partnership by
using the BUCKAROO/VAQUERO style of horsemanship as taught by Buck Brannaman, the late Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance.
We've found this can be accomplished with group lessons / small clinics
These are offered for 4-10 riders at our Arena or your Arena. We can set up a one day Clinic or a 2 day. Weekends work best for us. It may be possible to set something up for week day evenings 5:30-8:30pm or 6-9pm. If any interest please contact us, so we can talk more on the details and set up. Minimum cost per day is $300 which includes up to 6 hours of instructional time for 4 riders. Additional riders are $75 each. If facility is located further than 25 miles, additional cost is $2.00 per mile one way.
Doug Prettyman is very particular on what he does and how he handles
horses and people. He puts a lot of time into each horse and human he works with.
He starts colts, re-starts the scared or troubled horse, works spoiled saddle horses through issues, teaches horses to load in and out of a trailer, works with those who have trailer loading issues, and does extensive ground work with the horse to get their feet moving properly which engages their mind. He also helps the human with all the above things.
~ Horse evaluations are $50 at our barn in Brownsville (about 7 miles east of I-5)
spend 2-3 hours working your horse like he does a colt to see where it’s at
and where its mind is. He will put a ride on them if they checkout as ready to
ride. Some horses we run across really are not broke at all and need to be worked with more before he will ride them. That may take a bit longer than one session. Additional rides after that are $25 each if you haul in. He may travel
to your barn to do evaluations, depending on the situation. Cost is $75 at your facility if within 25 miles ~ $125 if we need to bring our round pen to work your horse. (Sometimes an enclosed pen is needed to get started) If further than 25 miles, cost is $2.00 per mile one way
~ Trailer loading lessons for you and your horse are $50 at our facility the first time, then $25 a lesson after that if you haul in. At your facility cost is $75 per lesson within 25 miles ~ $125 if we need to bring our round pen to work your horse. (Sometimes an enclosed pen is needed to get started working the horse) If further than 25 miles cost is $2.00 per mile one way
This includes traveling to your location and working the horse on the ground as needed to get the horse going in and out of the trailer.
~ Lessons at our barn are $75.00 per lesson (ground work and/or riding)
You can bring your
horse and ride with Doug and he’ll instruct as you go along or you can use one of our horses or ponies for your lesson. This type of lesson is usually about 2 hours.
Doug can also travel to your Arena for a group lesson / clinic at a set rate of $300 per day for up to 6 hours of instruction and 4 riders. Additional riders over 4 are $75 each. If facility is located further than 25 miles, additional cost is $2.00 per mile one way.
~ Beginner Lessons (Adults or Children) $25 (these are about an hour)
These lessons for the beginning rider will be done with our horses & ponies only. Cost is $25 per lesson. We will start with covering the basics ~ catching, haltering, leading, tying, grooming, cleaning the hooves, saddling, bridling, mounting, dismounting, riding posture, proper hand position, holding of the mecate rein, and so on.
As we prepare you to ride we will share the importance of groundwork. Once we get to riding we will start with, walking, and stopping while trying to time up with the horse. In the beginning the riding may be done in a round pen and possibly with one of us at the end of the lead rope for yours or your child's safety and confidence building. We can work out a program that will suit you and/or your child.
~ We also offer group lessons / small clinics as mentioned above
~ Tune-ups $250.00 by the week (worked 5x) or $850.00 for 30 days (you are welcome to watch each day your horse is worked for your learning as well).
~ Monthly fee for working with your colt/horse is $850.00
You may come watch your horse being worked from day one. Likely, it won't be possible for you to come every day, but the more you watch, observe, ask questions, the better the learning for you and the better for the horse when you take him home. 30 days on a horse is merely the beginning. The colt needs to have great support from the handler in the early stages of riding to be the best it can be.
Doug will give them a solid start as a variety of things are worked on while they are here. He goes through all the same steps with the all ready started horse that he does with a colt to look for any holes that may be there.
He uses the round pen from the start, to hook them on, to change eyes, to work them with his rope, and to let them travel freely with the saddle and first ride. He rides in the arena, all around outside, and up and down the hills with other horses and by themselves, opens gates, flags them, uses his rope on and around them while riding, gets them up to the fence to get on, and works with them getting in and out of the trailer comfortably. As mentioned above a variety of things are worked on during the 30 days they are here. Colts (unstarted horses) need to be with us for a minimum of 30 days. Some problem or troubled horses may need to be here longer than 30 days. Please remember a month won’t fully train a horse, but Doug can usually get a lot of good things started in that time, as I mentioned previously he spends a lot of time with them.
